When we think of an auto workshop, few things that come to our minds are tools and parts of machinery scattered around, engine components dangling from rusted chains waiting to be inserted in a vehicle or a vehicle whose hood has been opened and now held up with the help of a flimsy stick. We might also see the trunk lid in a similar position while technicians and mechanics try to find the fault inside with half of their bodies inside. Overall a very mismanaged and messy picture is what comes to our mind.

Workers may sustain fatal and life-threatening injuries in a mismanaged workshop from even trivial-seeming pieces of equipment such as the grease from a grease gun. Therefore, workshop safety carries importance of great magnitude and laying down guidelines regarding the safety precautions in a workshop falls on the onus of the supervisor or manager of the respective workshop to ensure a safe workplace of their technicians.

Today we take a look into few of the safety precautions that should be common for every auto workshop.

Safety Precautions In Workshop Tips:

A Clean Workplace Is A Safe Workplace

A systematic workplace is where all discarded parts go to a single junk box, its well ventilated, there are clearly marked areas for keeping the heavy machine parts, a place where all tools must be kept after use and a place for safe assembly in case of an emergency. A systematic workshop will enable swift movement of individuals and thus improve productivity and will also help for quick evacuation in case of emergency scenarios.

Awareness

Auto technicians are exposed to many hazardous chemicals at the workshop and thus clear safety instructions about each of those components should be made available to be referred to so that technicians are aware of the hazards and can keep themselves safe. Proper disposal of chemical waste and old batteries should be made.

Proper Training Prevents Injuries

An auto workshop is a place which deals with heavy machinery that needs to be regularly lifted and replaced. Ensuring every technician is properly trained to work can prevent long-term injuries such as back strains and sprains which may occur in case an untrained workman misjudges the weight of a wheel rim or seat and tries to manually pick it up.

Provision Of Protective Equipment

Even in big workshops where the assembly is automated, there is always some work that needs to be done manually and this is where protective gears come in. A pair of gloves can save a technician’s fingers from injury while fitting a blind spot mirror that cracked while fitting. There should be adequate fire extinguishers available to combat a sudden fire resulting from leaded gasoline. Also, warning signs forbidding smoking or engaging in potentially unsafe activities inside the workshop should be put up. Lastly, there should be provisions to administer first aid in case of an accident.

Wrap-Up

A safe workplace is not only the responsibility of its owner but also the technicians working in it. An owner can take precautions and set guidelines but it is the duty of the technicians to follow those guidelines, adhere to the rules and report to the management about those who are not following the protocols. It is only by working together that a safe working environment can be created.
